Leonard Mitchell is one of the most important recurring characters in Lord of Mysteries and one of Klein Moretti’s earliest allies in the supernatural world.
Introduced as a member of the Tingen Nighthawks, Leonard initially appears to be a talented but somewhat unconventional young Beyonder serving the Church of the Evernight Goddess.
But Leonard is hiding a secret of his own.
Inside him resides Pallez Zoroast, an ancient and extraordinarily knowledgeable being connected to the Error Pathway.
That relationship gives Leonard access to knowledge far beyond what an ordinary low-Sequence Beyonder should possess.
Over time, Leonard develops from Klein’s Nighthawk colleague into a Red Gloves operative, a stronger Beyonder of the Darkness Pathway and eventually a member of the Tarot Club under the codename The Star.
This guide explains who Leonard Mitchell is, his powers and Pathway, his relationship with Klein Moretti, the mystery of Pallez Zoroast and why The Star becomes such an important figure in Lord of Mysteries.
EXPLORE LORD OF MYSTERIES MERCH
Who Is Leonard Mitchell?
Leonard Mitchell is first introduced in Tingen as a member of the local Nighthawks.
The Nighthawks are Beyonder operatives working under the Church of the Evernight Goddess.
Their responsibilities include investigating supernatural incidents, dealing with dangerous Beyonders and containing mystical threats that ordinary police forces cannot handle.
Leonard works alongside characters such as:
-
Dunn Smith
-
Klein Moretti
-
Old Neil
-
Daly Simone
-
Other members of the Tingen team
From the beginning, Leonard appears unusually confident.
He possesses supernatural knowledge that sometimes seems too advanced for his apparent level.
That is because Leonard is not completely alone.
What Pathway Does Leonard Mitchell Follow?
Leonard follows the Darkness Pathway.
This Pathway is closely associated with the Church of the Evernight Goddess.
Its early Sequences develop abilities connected to:
-
Night
-
Reduced need for sleep
-
Darkness
-
Dreams
-
Concealment
-
Spiritual perception
-
Tranquility
-
Misfortune-related authorities at higher levels
Leonard is already a Beyonder when Klein first meets him.
He appears early in the story as a Midnight Poet, an early Sequence of the Darkness Pathway. His progression later carries him significantly higher within the same Pathway.

What Is the Darkness Pathway?
The Darkness Pathway is one of the 22 Standard Beyonder Pathways in Lord of Mysteries.
It begins with Sequence 9: Sleepless.
As Beyonders advance, its abilities increasingly revolve around night, dreams, concealment and supernatural effects associated with darkness.
At lower levels, a practitioner may gain practical advantages such as functioning with less sleep and becoming more capable during nighttime activities.
At higher Sequences, the Pathway becomes much more abstract and powerful.
Its authorities eventually extend far beyond simply “seeing in the dark.”
This progression is typical of Lord of Mysteries.
A seemingly simple Sequence 9 ability eventually develops into something connected to fundamental supernatural concepts.
Why Is Leonard Called a Poet?
Leonard’s early Sequence is Midnight Poet.
The title suits his character unusually well.
He has a relaxed, almost romantic personality and is sometimes presented with a somewhat dramatic or literary temperament.
Klein frequently associates Leonard with the image of a poet.
But the title is not merely a personality description.
It is part of Leonard’s Darkness Pathway progression.
Lord of Mysteries frequently gives Sequence names that function simultaneously as:
-
Supernatural professions
-
Acting roles
-
Symbols
-
Descriptions of abilities
Midnight Poet is one of the clearest examples.
What Powers Does Leonard Mitchell Have?
Leonard’s abilities evolve considerably throughout the story.
Because he follows the Darkness Pathway, many of his powers are connected to nighttime, dreams, concealment and supernatural perception.
Enhanced Nighttime Abilities
The Darkness Pathway naturally favors activity associated with night.
Early Beyonders can function with reduced dependence on normal sleep patterns and gain abilities suited to nighttime operations.
This makes the Pathway particularly appropriate for an organization called the Nighthawks.
Spiritual Perception
Like many trained Beyonders, Leonard develops the ability to interact with and investigate supernatural phenomena that ordinary humans cannot easily perceive.
This is essential for Nighthawk missions.
Dream-Related Abilities
The Darkness Pathway becomes increasingly connected to dreams.
Dreams are extremely important in Lord of Mysteries because they can be used for:
-
Investigation
-
Communication
-
Psychological influence
-
Mystical encounters
-
Hidden information
Concealment
At higher levels, the Pathway develops increasingly powerful abilities related to hiding information, people or supernatural activity.
This makes advanced Darkness Beyonders extremely difficult opponents.
Combat Experience
Leonard is not simply a mystical specialist.
His work with the Nighthawks and later the Red Gloves gives him extensive practical experience dealing with dangerous Beyonders and supernatural creatures.
That experience becomes as important as his raw abilities.
Who Is Pallez Zoroast?
Pallez Zoroast is one of the most important mysteries surrounding Leonard.
Pallez is an ancient being associated with the Error Pathway.
Rather than appearing openly beside Leonard, he resides within him in a parasitic relationship.
This immediately makes Leonard unusual even among Beyonders.
Pallez possesses enormous experience and knowledge about the supernatural world.
He can therefore provide Leonard with information that Leonard should not normally have access to at his Sequence.
This explains why Leonard sometimes appears to know far more than expected.
Is Pallez Zoroast Evil?
The relationship is more complicated than a simple villain possessing a human host.
Pallez certainly has his own interests.
Leonard also understands that having an ancient supernatural being inside him is inherently dangerous.
But their relationship develops beyond pure hostility.
Pallez frequently provides:
-
Supernatural knowledge
-
Warnings
-
Advice
-
Information about Pathways
-
Historical context
-
Guidance about dangerous situations
This creates one of the more unusual mentor relationships in Lord of Mysteries.
Pallez is simultaneously:
-
A danger
-
A secret
-
A source of knowledge
-
A mentor figure
-
An ancient survivor
Why Is Pallez Connected to the Error Pathway?
The Error Pathway specializes in concepts such as:
-
Theft
-
Deception
-
Exploiting loopholes
-
Parasitism
-
Stealing abilities
-
Stealing identity
-
Exploiting rules
Parasitism therefore fits naturally within the Pathway.
Pallez’s existence inside Leonard demonstrates just how strange Error Pathway abilities can become.
This also creates a direct thematic connection between Leonard and another major character:
Amon.
Amon is one of the most recognizable representatives of the Error Pathway.
The fact that Pallez and Amon are connected to the same supernatural system becomes extremely important later.
Leonard Mitchell and Amon
Amon is one of the greatest threats associated with the Error Pathway.
His abilities involving theft, identity and parasitism make him uniquely dangerous.
That has serious implications for Pallez.
An ancient being hiding inside Leonard cannot ignore someone like Amon.
This means Leonard’s personal secret gradually connects him to conflicts far beyond the original Tingen Nighthawks.
His relationship with Pallez effectively places Leonard inside a much larger struggle involving high-level Beyonders.

Leonard Mitchell and Klein Moretti
Leonard and Klein begin as colleagues.
Both work under Captain Dunn Smith in the Tingen Nighthawks.
Their personalities are different.
Klein is cautious, analytical and constantly attempting to understand the supernatural world around him.
Leonard appears more confident and instinctive.
But there is an important similarity between them:
both are hiding enormous secrets.
Klein is connected to the gray fog and Sefirah Castle.
Leonard carries Pallez Zoroast.
Neither initially understands the full nature of the other’s situation.
This creates one of the most interesting early relationships in the series.
Did Leonard Suspect Klein?
Leonard notices that Klein is unusual.
This is not surprising.
Klein repeatedly survives strange situations, advances quickly and demonstrates abilities that do not always match what people expect from him.
Leonard himself also knows what it is like to hide a supernatural secret.
That makes him more likely than an ordinary person to recognize that something about Klein does not completely fit the obvious explanation.
However, recognizing that Klein is unusual is very different from understanding the enormous truth behind The Fool, Sefirah Castle and Klein’s later identities.
Why Are Leonard and Klein Such Good Foils?
Both characters enter the story with hidden supernatural advantages.
Klein has Sefirah Castle.
It gives him access to the gray fog, divination advantages and eventually the Tarot Club.
Leonard has Pallez Zoroast.
Pallez provides supernatural knowledge and insight far beyond Leonard’s apparent level.
Yet their situations are very different.
Klein’s mysterious advantage gives him authority but little explanation.
Leonard’s mysterious advantage gives him explanations but creates the danger of carrying another being inside himself.
That contrast makes their friendship especially interesting.
Leonard and the Tingen Nighthawks
Leonard’s early development cannot be separated from the Tingen team.
The Nighthawks are more than coworkers.
They become a small community of people who repeatedly risk their lives protecting ordinary citizens from supernatural dangers.
Their work exposes Leonard to:
-
Rampagers
-
Cursed objects
-
Dangerous Beyonders
-
Secret organizations
-
Rituals
-
Mystical investigations
-
Death
The Tingen period becomes emotionally important to both Leonard and Klein.
Events there shape their motivations long after the surviving characters move elsewhere.
What Are the Nighthawks?
The Nighthawks are Beyonder operatives serving the Church of the Evernight Goddess.
Their missions involve dealing with supernatural threats that fall under the church’s jurisdiction.
A typical investigation can involve:
-
Strange deaths
-
Ritual magic
-
Secret cults
-
Corrupted Beyonders
-
Sealed Artifacts
-
Supernatural creatures
-
Unauthorized mystical activity
Because their work involves constant exposure to supernatural corruption, being a Nighthawk is extremely dangerous.

Leonard After the Tingen Incident
The events in Tingen dramatically change Leonard.
Without revealing every major plot development immediately, the loss associated with the Tingen team becomes one of the defining motivations behind his later actions.
Leonard does not simply move on.
He seeks answers.
That search eventually leads him deeper into the Church of the Evernight Goddess’s supernatural operations.
His career advances beyond the local Nighthawk unit.
He becomes connected to the Red Gloves.
What Are the Red Gloves?
The Red Gloves are elite operatives associated with the Church of the Evernight Goddess.
Compared with an ordinary local Nighthawk team, they operate on a broader scale and deal with particularly serious supernatural cases.
Becoming part of the Red Gloves represents a major step in Leonard’s development.
It means he is no longer simply the talented young Nighthawk Klein first meets.
He is becoming a much more experienced investigator and combatant.
The role also takes him into conflicts involving stronger Beyonders and more dangerous mysteries.
Leonard Mitchell and Ince Zangwill
Ince Zangwill is deeply connected to the tragedy that shapes Leonard’s later development.
His actions affect multiple members of the Tingen Nighthawks and create one of the story’s most important revenge threads.
For Leonard, investigating Ince is not simply professional duty.
It becomes personal.
This shared connection also continues linking Leonard and Klein even after their lives appear to move in different directions.
Why Does Leonard Want Revenge?
The answer comes back to Tingen.
Leonard loses people who matter to him.
Rather than treating those deaths as unavoidable occupational losses, he continues searching for those responsible.
This gives Leonard’s character more emotional depth than his initial relaxed personality might suggest.
He can appear casual.
He can joke.
He can behave like the “poet” Klein imagines him to be.
But underneath that exterior, Leonard carries grief and anger.
That contrast becomes an important part of his development.
When Does Leonard Join the Tarot Club?
Leonard eventually becomes a member of the Tarot Club.
His codename is:
The Star.
This is especially significant because Leonard has a much more personal connection to Klein than many of the organization’s other members.
Audrey Hall initially knows The Fool as a mysterious existence.
Alger Wilson knows him through the same supernatural identity.
Leonard, however, knew Klein Moretti directly.
He worked beside him.
He investigated cases with him.
He experienced Tingen with him.
This gives The Star a unique place within the Tarot Club.

Why Is Leonard Called The Star?
The Star is Leonard’s Tarot Club codename.
Like Justice, The Hanged Man, The Magician and the other Major Arcana identities, it conceals his real identity while giving him a symbolic position within the organization.
The Tarot Club names do not directly equal a character’s Pathway.
Leonard is:
The Star in the Tarot Club
but follows:
the Darkness Pathway as a Beyonder.
This distinction is important for readers learning the power system.
Tarot identity and Beyonder Pathway are separate concepts.
What Does The Star Represent?
In traditional tarot symbolism, The Star can be associated with concepts such as:
-
Hope
-
Renewal
-
Guidance
-
Faith
-
Recovery after hardship
These ideas fit Leonard surprisingly well.
His story includes enormous loss.
Yet he continues moving forward.
He joins stronger organizations.
He seeks the truth.
He grows as a Beyonder.
He reconnects with people and mysteries from his past.
The symbolic interpretation is thematic rather than a formal explanation given by the story, but the connection works well with Leonard’s development.
Leonard and Sefirah Castle
After becoming The Star, Leonard participates in Tarot Club meetings above the gray fog.
This creates a striking reversal.
Leonard once knew Klein as a fellow Nighthawk.
Now he participates in an organization presided over by The Fool, one of Klein’s most important identities.
Sefirah Castle allows Klein to maintain separation between these identities.
That separation remains crucial because different people know different versions of him.

Does Leonard Know The Fool Is Klein?
The relationship between Leonard’s knowledge of Klein and the identity of The Fool develops gradually.
Lord of Mysteries is built heavily around hidden identities.
Klein operates through multiple personas, including:
-
Klein Moretti
-
Sherlock Moriarty
-
Gehrman Sparrow
-
Dwayne Dantès
-
Merlin Hermes
-
The World
-
The Fool
Different characters understand different pieces of this structure.
Leonard is particularly interesting because his personal connection to Klein gives him clues and emotional context that many other characters do not possess.

Leonard and Pallez: Mentor or Parasite?
The answer is:
both, in different ways.
Pallez is literally connected to Leonard through parasitism.
That fact cannot be ignored.
But their long-term relationship develops characteristics similar to mentorship.
Pallez advises Leonard.
Leonard consults him.
They argue.
They depend on one another.
And their survival interests often overlap.
This produces a relationship that is difficult to classify using ordinary categories.
It is not simply friendship.
It is not simply possession.
And it is not simply a teacher-student relationship.
That ambiguity is exactly what makes it interesting.
Why Doesn't Pallez Simply Take Over Leonard?
The supernatural mechanics surrounding parasitism are more complicated than ordinary possession.
Pallez has his own reasons for hiding and surviving.
Leonard also remains an active individual rather than becoming a passive shell.
Their relationship develops around mutual survival.
That makes it fundamentally different from the worst forms of parasitism shown elsewhere in the series.
Leonard Mitchell vs Klein Moretti
The two characters offer an interesting comparison.
| Leonard Mitchell | Klein Moretti |
|---|---|
| The Star | The Fool |
| Darkness Pathway | Fool Pathway |
| Nighthawk | Nighthawk |
| Red Gloves operative | Multiple identities and organizations |
| Connected to Pallez Zoroast | Connected to Sefirah Castle |
| Night and dream abilities | Divination, identity and mystery |
| Early colleague of Klein | Central protagonist |
| Hides an ancient being inside him | Hides multiple supernatural identities |
Their similarities help explain why their relationship remains important even after Tingen.
Leonard Mitchell vs Audrey Hall
Leonard and Audrey both become Major Arcana members of the Tarot Club, but their backgrounds are almost opposites.
Audrey Hall
-
Noble background
-
Visionary Pathway
-
Psychology and observation
-
Joins at the very beginning
-
Discovers supernatural society through the Tarot Club
Leonard Mitchell
-
Church operative
-
Darkness Pathway
-
Dreams, night and concealment
-
Joins later
-
Already has extensive Beyonder experience
This diversity is one of the Tarot Club’s greatest strengths.
Each member contributes access to a different part of the supernatural world.
Is Leonard Mitchell Strong?
Yes.
But like most Lord of Mysteries characters, Leonard’s effectiveness cannot be measured only through destructive power.
His strengths include:
-
Darkness Pathway abilities
-
Practical investigation experience
-
Church training
-
Red Gloves experience
-
Knowledge from Pallez
-
Strong survival instincts
-
Access to Tarot Club intelligence
Pallez is especially important.
Leonard can sometimes understand dangers that other Beyonders at a similar level would not recognize because he has access to an ancient source of information.
Is Leonard Stronger Than Klein?
Their relative strength changes dramatically depending on where in the story the comparison is made.
Early on, Leonard already has Beyonder experience when Klein is still learning the basics of the supernatural world.
Later, Klein’s advancement becomes extraordinary.
A simple permanent ranking would therefore be misleading.
It is more useful to compare:
-
Current Sequence
-
Pathway
-
Equipment
-
Available information
-
Preparation
-
Supernatural allies
-
Combat circumstances
Lord of Mysteries rarely reduces meaningful battles to one character having a larger power number.
Why Leonard Is Important to Klein
Leonard represents something rare in Klein’s life:
a connection to his earliest Beyonder identity.
As Klein adopts more names and becomes increasingly entangled in high-level supernatural conflicts, fewer people remain connected to the person he was in Tingen.
Leonard remembers that version of him.
He remembers the Nighthawks.
He remembers their shared colleagues.
He remembers the events that shaped both of them.
That makes Leonard emotionally important in a way that goes beyond combat or supernatural power.
Leonard Mitchell in the Anime
Leonard appears in the animated adaptation from its early storyline as part of the Tingen cast. Crunchyroll’s published dub cast lists Leonard Mitchell alongside Klein Moretti, Audrey Hall, Dunn Smith and Alger Wilson, confirming his place among the anime’s principal early characters.
As the adaptation progresses beyond Tingen, Leonard’s role has room to expand considerably because his story continues into the Red Gloves, the Tarot Club and the deeper mysteries surrounding Pallez.
